Reverting: Did I Get Heat Damage? + A Giveaway

Reverting: Did I Get Heat Damage? + A Giveaway

Being natural for nearly 4 years, I’ve learned my hair, I’ve studied it, and been through trial and error to make sure I’m doing everything in my power to keep it healthy. Daily moisturizing, maintaing my protein to moisture balance, limiting the usage of heat on my hair to once a year only by professionals. This is proof that even when you take all precautionary steps, the outcome could still not be in your favor.

If you’ve read my previous hair post, you’d know that I only get my hair straighten once a year for a good trim. This year I decided to get it done around Christmas. Since the weather was cooler it would last longer, and I’d be able to show my length off for the holidays. My stylist did an amazing job when she straightened my hair and she used all precautions. Heat protectant, blow drying on low heat, as well passing through small parts no more than twice with a comb.

When I finally got the chance to wash my hair, I was nevous and had anxiety as all naturals do. “Please don’t let me have heat damage, please don’t let me have heat damage.” The back sections curled almost immediately under the water and a wave of relief washed over me. Now, when I got to the front, the right side waved a little, but the left side was bone straight. There shouldn’t be any doubt in your mind that I was freaking out. I’ve done everything right with my hair for 4 years JUST to get heat damage? My instant thought was to get the sisscors and start cutting, but hair knowledge along with my family and friends stopped me.

Whenever you have some form of hair damage, do a protein treatment before making vast decisions. And that what I did, I used a store bought Shea Moisture protein deep treatment mask for about 2 hours. While it didn’t bring my curls in full, the bone straight sections were starting to wave/curl. There may be hope! I plan on incorporating some form of protein treatment in every wash day until the first week of March. So close to my waist length goal, and I may chop it all off and start over.

Some people may think I’m crazy, but what’s the point of having long hair if it isn’t healthy. My identity is not defined by hair, nothing is. If it comes to that point, this will just be a lessoned learned, and another new beginning.
